Dr. Ries poses a questions for Chapter 8

Let us assume that you are a middle school teacher in your specific content area and you have students who are struggling with the reading of new words.     Skim through Chapter 8 in our classroom text and locate two (2) specific strategies for "working with words"  that you think might help your students.     Why have you chosen to use these particular strategies?

After reading the chapter and thinking about which strategies would work best for me if I were struggling with understanding new words while I was reading, I have decided that Brainstorming and Graphic Organizers. I think both of these methods make understand a bit more simple. They establish a students prior knowledge, help them sort and categorize what they know vs. what they do not know. This also allows them to understand based on context clues. I feel they would work if I were struggling.

  2. The first strategy I would use when working with students who are struggling with new words would be a concept circle. This is a great visual tools that would allow the students to make a connection between the words they were struggling with and something that they may be more familiar with. This bring the new words that may seem difficult to the students down to their learning level. I would also use a vocabulary triangle with the students that were struggling with new words. This would allow the students to have practice with using the words in a sentence and gain further understanding of the definition of the words. Having the students create their own sentences using the new vocabulary words in multiple sentences would certainly help them feel more confident when understanding the new words.
